MG MGA - gearbox problem

When I replaced the syncros and bearings in non syncro first gear box it was very hard to shift between the gears. After a couple of hundred miles it freed out fairly well. Now after 3000 mls a prspective buyer pointed out that it is harder to shift than normal and that I have just gotten used to it. After a carefull acessment I have to agree with him. The front seal is now also leaking. An alinement problem or end float ? ? It was ok before except for the 2nd syncro. The input and out put shafts turned freely by hand after assembly. As it's such a B of a job to pull the engine and box all suggestions appreciated before I start. Thanks Sean

I found the same problem after reconditioning my 1500 box. It was free before installing in the car but a pig to change gear when installed. After close examination of the original gearbox drawing (shown in manual's this is wrong)and photo's of gearboxes I found the only difference was the position of the top plate which has a raised section, this needs turning round to give clearance. I managed to turn the plate by removing the tunnel top section, here I could just get to the hex bolts. I told Barney this and he has shown the error on his site, Barney said the raised section on the top plate is for reverse gear only but I found it worked for all gears. This could be your problem?
