MG MGA - Gears clashing

I have a 1958 MGA Roadster. When I drove it yesterday I notced that during upshift from 1st to 2nd, the gears clash. This does not occur when shifting to any other gear. Is this most likely a worn syncro? And how can it be verified? Is there anything else that would cause this? There was no evidence of gear clashing a few days ago.

Is this most likely a worn syncro? YES, almost certainly. Second gear is prone to failing after a few thousand miles.

And how can it be verified? Many more on this site will tell the same story!

Remedy: Pull the gearbox and replace. After market replacements are available in Australia - they last much longer.

When I got my car, someone had put heavy hypoid oil in the gearbox. It smelt horrible when it got hot and the syncro didn't work at all on second. I drained the gearbox and re-filled with 10/40 and gradually the syncro came back, and now it works fine. Just in case you've done the same thing!
