MG MGA - gerator lube?

I'm getting a little squeak under the hood above 2000 rpm. I want to rule out dry generator bushings. I think the back bearing is lubed with motor oil squirted into the hole at the center of the back end bracket. Can the bearings in the front be lubed, and if so how? I'd rather not take the generator off or apart if I don't have to.

Thanks

From memory, front bearing is a shielded ball bearing- a common size. You can work lube through the metal shield. If the "shields" are rubber, it is sealed. You can still relube but it is tougher. Or you can drill the rivets and install a new one. Any quality hardware store should have a double seal bearing that fits. Re-rivet or replace with 10-32 screws cut to length and peened/glued with Loctite.

The rear bushing is standard size as well and is easily replaced. Fill it with grease and find a shaft that fits tightly insert the shaft and tap it a few times with a hammer. The grease should push the bushing out- its viscosity limits flow velocity so a sharp rap will move the bushing. If this doesn't work, find a tap and run it into the bushing. The tap will pull it out. I can't remember which method I used. Your hardware store should have an Oilite bush that fits.

BTW- most precision bearings are metric sized- probably because the Swiss first developed the machinery needed to grind precision bearings.

Hope this helps

Bill, You have one fine hardware store. You would have to search four counties here in Florida to find the items you describe.

Have you listened carefully to the water pump. Could be this if it starts squeaking as the water gets hot. Have had this on what was a brand new pump for years now - but at 1000 rpm.
With engine squeaking, try putting your ear to a long screwdriver and use it as a stethoscope on both ends of the dynamo outer casing and then the water pump. Which is loudest? Make sure the belt is nice and loose. Overtight it will wreck the rear dynamo bearing.

Minnesota is lucky to remember its farming roots. It is a state of tinkerers. I'd recommend taking the bearing into a hardware store and hand it to the oldest person working. By the third or fourth store you should have what you need.

Was anyone else thrown by the thread title? Our cars have a gerOtor but it should, of all parts, not squeak or need lubrication.

For the newer owners, this is what your oil pump looks like on the inside. Trust me, you'll get acquainted soon enough.

Have fun,
