MG MGA - Gold plated RHD rack

The latest RHD rack to come on Ebay has gone for GBP770.00! The only thing that keeps the prices of these racks up is the lack of any response from Moss to reproduce the RHD Mexican racks. They brought back the LHD racks a year or so ago, and they sell for very reasonable prices..what is difficult in tooling up for a RHD version?
Gary Lock

My guess is that it is just a question of quantity. There are probably over 20 times more LHD cars around than RHD. If you were to ask any engineering firm with the capability what would be the cost of making a rack, or anything else involving expensive tooling, the first thing they would ask you would be how many you wanted because the tooling cost clearly has to be recovered and the unit price would be set to achieve this. The unit cost would probably be very sensitive to production run for up to a few hundred knocked off. If you risked asking for a large run of RHD racks to get the price down the demand might well be satisfied before a fraction of it had been sold.......................mike

I shall be listing an MGA rhd rack on ebay today and mine will be complete unlike yesterdays listing which lacked the side rods, also a dash and that made some £400 from same vendor. I will also include in the listing an accelerator pedal assembly and the dipswitch bracket.

At one point these guys were making the rack parts:

email extract below:

Hi Mark, yes we have the housings in stock and they are £220 each, the rack bar and pinion is £255

I just wanted the housing to convert a twin cam rack.

Let me know how you get on.

Not a rack, but I will be listing a RHD dash, RHD accelerator pedal, and a RHD complete pedal assembly on ebay. They are going on tonight Thursday, for 10 days.

Sorry about the start prices!!

HI-J K.
From all that I have read and heard about J K I would run and jump away from any purchase involving them. Some of their gearing will not even fit. Many people that paid up front are UP THE CREEK.

I understand some of you need funds but why no be like Dominic and I and sell to others on this site for an honest price (or as we both have done several times just given unwanted bits away). No I cant afford it really but at least I can live with my concience. If your in it to make as much money as you can then your not an enthusiast and shouldnt represent yourself as such on this site, your just a profiteer! At least thats my opinion

If your not overly perfect and are looking for a low cost substitute you can fit the entire front MGB subframe into the MGA chassis rails fairly cheaply and easily ( hey guys are fitting 5 speed ford boxes into MGAs, at least this is still genuine MG!). ANy good hotrod shop should do this for about $500-700Aust if you supply parts. Naturally you no longer need expensive MGA suspension, brake or hubs. I know, I have done it years ago

Mark if people like me did not make money / profit selling parts for MGA amongst others, then the parts would not be available for anyone!!

I do not think it says in the rules that if you make money you cannot be an enthusiast!!!

My business is the restoration of classic cars. I also compete in historic racing, and own at this time 5 MGs.

And I am an enthusiast!!

If a part sells to the highest bidder, then it likely went to the guy who needs it the most. What could be more noble? People seem to praise the idea that the cars are selling for higher and higher prices. Why should it be different for the spare parts?

(Clinmbing upon my soapbox)
Many years ago I used to sell Real Estate. One of my pet peeves was the fact that friends expected me to sell their home or help them find a home and reduce the commission. I worked hard for the money, and started to ask them whether they were willing to give me an extra commission point because we were friends. While I also sell items to others on this BBS for lower prices than what I can get on Ebay, I attempt to obtain a fair price without excessively charging for the poart. Having said that, I think Ebay is one of the best market venues because you are getting a good deal all the time. You set your asking price with the minimum bid or reserve, and if the item is worth more, you often-times get it. If you are buying, you decide how much you will spend, and know that you are paying a fair market price, rather than inflated prices. I have sold items on Ebay for much less than they sold for only a couple of weeks before, and have paid higher prices than Ebay sales indicated the item should go for. I don't consider myself to have been cheated. You have to remember that you want the part. Nobody is forcing you to pay that price.

Well I am confused!!

I put my RHD pedals and dash on ebay, turned down I do not know how many Buy it Now offers, at alot more than the start price, but did not get an actual bid.

Loads of watchers as well.

Obviously nobody really wants RHD parts?

I see Ron did not sell his RHD parts either.

And now someone is offering a set of RHD clutch and brake pedals on ebay uk for GBP 375 . The only difference between them and a LHD version is the angle of the bend - simply heat the LHD pair with a torch and rebend to the desired position and spacing and save yourself the money. The rest of the pedal box is the same for both LHD and RHD.

Sometimes I wonder how gullible these dealers think people really are!
dominic clancy

Dominic, obviously people are not all fooled by these high prices. Reminds me when we used to have a sole MGA dealer here in Brisbane then another guy who was more an enthusiast in his attitude came on the scene with fair deals...prices dropped considerably yet they both still made a profit. I stil say stick with other enthusuasts for your parts (and hopefully pay fair prices) rather than the money hungry dealers...but thats just my opinion.

On another note, I just have found my old fiberglass molds for original style fiberglass boot, bonnet and door skins if any one needs/wants such a part here in Aussie. I can get the parts made up at cost or you can locate a local fabricator if you want to deal directly with them, I will just drop off the molds for them to use, naturally no profit or payment to me expected/wanted, you just pay freight for parts.

Also who was it here in Aussie that wanted those competition style windscreen frames and uprights I found in my spares stock?
