MG MGA - Gold Seal Info
Hi Folks: I usually reside on the MG T-series list but need some help. I am trying to find out all that I can about Gold Seal engines – in particular I would like to obtain a photograph of or, better yet, an original metal Gold Seal engine tag. Also: Does anyone have any information about this rebuilding program? Were the engines built in-house or was there a third party suppler? I have obtained a picture of the original gold colour and engine specifications as supplied by BMC but that is about it. Any help appreciated Godspeed as we motor in Safety Fast Jc |

JC Neil Cairns (UK-Based) is an MG authority on engines. Try this link and click on 'Engines for MGs' that he wrote: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/news/news971.html It opened in Word on my laptop. Use the find feature to search for Gold Seal. Steve |

John, here's a photo of the 1500 gold seal engine that was in my MGA 1600 when I got it about twenty years ago. It served me well for a few years until I found a 1600 that I rebuilt and installed. The gold I used closely matched some remaining gold paint on the engine. I think the "Original MGA" had some info on the gold seal engines. Can't help you with T-Series, my TD is a MKII. Marvin

Hi John, My mate has a Y type which is fitted with a factory refurbished XPAG with it's proper identification plate on the side. I don't think the term "Gold Seal" existed then. Is a photo of this plate what you are looking for? The later A & B series engines only had a normal stamped plate with the special gold seal code number for the particular engine size. There is a brief mention of the code system at the end of the below document www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccz/technic/codeseng.pdf Paddy |

My daughter bought an MGB GT in London in the late 1980's that had a gold seal engine. I think that the idea was to return the engines to factory specs? From memory the block had been rebored (and new pistons fitted) but I think that the crank had been new (ie standard journal sizes, etc). Perhaps other components had been renewed as well (head, valves, etc?). Upon dismantling it was all "borderline" so we did a complete engine (and gearbox, but it was a late MK1 so we did the best we could) overhaul. Late MK1's had a larger diameter layshaft (in a bid to overcpome gearbox problems I dare say) which I had to get made. The car won its class in the National Meeting Concours some years ago and is still in our (extended) family. |

John I am restoring a right hand drive 53 MGTD which had a factory rebuilt engine. I don't know if it is a gold seal but it had the factory rebuilt tag on the engine. It is brass and was falling apart so I removed it before I sent the engine to the shop for boring. I have the tag if a picture will help. Thanks and have a good day! John |
