MG MGA - Good or Bad

I spotted this MGA for sale at www.percivalmotorco.co.uk. Has it got all the right bits on it. Would it be worth as much in standard trim.

Depends what you consider 'right bits'. As described in the advert it is heavily modified.

I like the engine compartment.

In answer to your question, no. Take away the supercharger, 1800 engine, 5-speed box etc and you are down a good £5-7K in my basic reckoning.

No, it's not got "the right bits" on BUT - then it's up to you what you want to do with the car if you buy it!

I am insured to drive one not too unlike that one, and, it's probably the best car in the world to drive, great fun, torquey, awesome on the back roads, and fast on the motorways - just jolly heavy autotesting! It's got the same engine change, albeit a Peter Burgess special, and kicks out about the same BHP. (I've even been seen cleaning it as I like it that much!)

Having said that, I've never driven a "normal" MGA, so, don't have anything to compare it too ...!

As with all things - you gets what you pay for, and you buy what you want. If you're seriously interested, then go and take it out for a test drive. Not everyone likes that sort of power in a car that low to the ground - and some people LOVE it :)

Ok guys you caught me out It is my car unfortunatly I have a really bad back and every time I drive it I end up at the physio.I guess being over 60yrs and 6'4'' dosent help. So very reluctently its got to go.

Yes I spent the last 19 years getting it to where it is today and it drives fantasticly I realise that you can't use the forum to sell cars but I honestly wanted some feed back from the forum because If it dosn't sell I was considering putting it back to standard over the winter.

Your height or age isn't the problem, neither is the car. It's the seat or seat position that's doing your back in. put your energy into improving the seat or position, there must be some answers out there. Having spent 19 years on the car another year on the seat would surely pay dividends and allow you to keep and enjoy the car. And the rest of us bad backs may benefit from your pioneering work.

I suppose the question really is..what are the parts worth to sell seperatly if you do take them all off. I think this car has a level of differance which will attract sombody who want that "extra special" car to show off. Personally i like the idea of what you have done. Can i afford it, no. A quick look at some UK web pages show this car in the upper price bracket.

But what would it cost me to add to my car to make it like yours, probably lots.

Shame to hear your have to / want to sell it.

Hi David S, Glad you owned up - it looks a nice car (and yes the front over riders are on upside down but the rears are OK.) Selling it for nearly £27k might be difficult) . My friend in our club only got £27500 for his twin cam in very good condition. I would sell off the supercharger as they are like hen's teeth in complete working order (ask Dominic Clancy)and then you can reduce your asking price so that it moves more quickly. But why not keep it and as Ross says make the seats more comfortable. I am a similar age to you (but only 5'8")and have a squab of foam stuck behind my back (I have slight arthritis there)and wear a weighlifting neoprene back support (from Argos) sometimes which helps.

I know of three Judsons for sale at the moment and don't believe any of them have sold. And David doesn't have Judson but a modern Eaton kit instead - no rarity value there at all.

That's surprising Dominic - Oh well it looks like the 2nd part of my advice is best then - keep the car David and fix the seating to aid your back!!

So i think he has done all he can.

I persoally think the car is fantastic David although it will suprise me if it gets anywhere near 27K

As described by Dominic the supercharger is not worth too much if sold seperately but I suspect its value is enhanced by the desirability of MGB owners.

Removing equipment and selling seperately will not IMO make the overall selling price any better so far better to keep this wondeful car together and sell for a more reasonable price.

I think 20K could be achievable if you are prepared to wait? but I am a poor judge!

Thanks for all your comments I did try some bucket seats but they looked realy bad and of course they need to fold to alow rear access to get to the batteries and hood. I suppose I could keep experimenting. I am told that it is realy comfy to drive if your not 6'4''.

I had no idea that the overiders were on upside I just put them on what is strange is the rear are on the right way up.I should have gone to Claushauller.

If it hasn't sold by the autumn I may put it back to standard because I feel that it would appeal to a larger market. It would be a lot of work and I realise that it won't make so much money but buy next year who knows. But it was nice to hear your positive comments as I think for me it's up there with the best for current road conditions and it would be nice to think that some one else would be enjoying my vision. I will then probably buy a wreck MGB and stick the engine gearbox an s/charger in that. I could them stick any old seat in it as there is more room and scope to do so without having to worry about messing a beautiful car up. Not that the B is not nice in it own way.

Its been a hard decision to make as regards selling it
but if I am to be truthful I probably enjoy the building and all that go's with it, but if it dose go the one thing that I will definatly miss is this forum.
