MG MGA - grey smoke from exhaust
In the last few days, I've noticed grey smoke from the exhaust at high revs (above 4500rpm or so). I guess this is an over-rich mixture. Is this indicative of a bigger problem? or is it just a badly chosen pair of SU needles? |

Dan, Have the SU needles you mention been installed recently? If so, that may be the cause. I would make sure that the needles are positioned properly in the pistons. / gil |

They have been in place for several years now. |

Excess oil from the dash pots burning off? Steve |

Dan - Are you sure it is grey not white? - white is a symptom of water getting into the combustion chambers (head gasket?). A couple of years ago I had a darker grey exhaust and feared the worst - it turned out that oil had got out of the rocker cover gasket and dripped onto the exhaust manifold and found its way through the joint to the exhaust - a new rocker cover gasket and tightening the manifold nuts cured it - cheers Cam |
