MG MGA - Grinding noise under hood

Hi there, after an extended drive this weekend I began to hear a grinding, metal on metal sound under the hood for about the last 12 miles of the trip. Temp and oil pressure remained OK 70/195 so I kept going and popped the hood when I got home.

The souch is coming from either the water pump or the generator I'm almost certain of it. Sound more like the generator.

Any ideas on the cause???

Could it be the brushes in the gen have gone or would that lead to a total failure of the gen?

I do not know if the generator is still putting out voltage, but for the time being everything works as it should.

Also I have checked the fan at the front of the generator and it is not touching the body.

Thanks for any tips as to where to look,
Christopher

From your description it sounds like the bearings in the generator are going bad. Could be the water pump bearings also. Remove the fan belt and run the engine for a short time. No noise? Then it's one of the two items driven by the belt, check for play in either shaft, a bad bearing should allow some movement.
