MG MGA - GT-33 checklist

I thought it would be fun to see who's going to GT-33 and what last-minute projects they're attempting to get their cars ready. Anyone planning a maiden voyage of a new restoration?

I'm rebuilding the carbs, adding heat insulation, front end alignment, and tying up a couple other loose ends that I haven't bothered with until now.

My restoration was recently and this will be our first long journey in our black 1962 Mk II. Diana and I are looking to travel to GT 33 with others. We will be leaving Montreal, Quebec,on Saturday July 12 or possibly Sunday July 13. Anyone interested in hooking up soemwhere along the way ? We will be crossing into upstate New York at Cornwall, Ontario.

Does new body sills, body off repaint, and new carpeting count as a restoration? This is pretty close to last minute project. I think mine will be running this Friday night late, or Saturday morning for sure as it has an appointment to be somewhere (although you might not believe it from the current state of disassembly).

Since we are only three weeks from the GT, I think this qualifies as new. It might have 100 miles on it before departure.

I will be there early Sunday 7/13 for the Twin Cam Golden Jubilee, staying through Friday morning. I will also be presenting the Thursday PM tech session on Drivability of MGA, which should be a hoot as it covers a variety of disciplines. See you there.

My restoration was just finished this spring - also black - and this will be the first long drive in it. I've put about 500 miles on it looking for problems. There have been a few, but it looks good to go. We're leaving July 6th & driving across Ontario to Western New York. We'll be there a week and then we're heading for the GT on July 13th.

Where will you be in western New York ? Can you post a photo of your car?

I've already begun the trek to GT 33 - I left Florida Saturday morning and arrived here in the Easton PA area Sunday afternoon. 1,200 miles so far....tomorrow will drive to Valley Forge for the NAMGBR convention. After the convention will leave the car here at a buddy's house and HUGE Garage fly back to FLA and in two weeks fly back up to complete the trek to GT 33 before driving back to FLorida.

The only problem I had on the way up was a strange tinging sound coming from somewhere in the engine compartment. My buddy, John Wright, found the problem - apparently a stone or something came up under the car and hit the fan on the generator which bent it slightly and caused the tinging sound every time the fan went round and hit that spot. Whew glad thats all it was!!

See y'all in Seven Springs

PN,
We'll be in Springville, NY, about 30 miles south of Buffalo and visiting my wife's family (& showing off the "new" car).

Attached is a photo of me with it on a day that I drove it to work.

To all,
We have a small group, 4 or 5 cars, leaving from Binghamton NY on Sunday, July 13th around 8:00 AM. Happy to hook up with anyone en-route. Some of us are going to stay for the vintage race in Pittsburgh and return on Sunday, July 20th. Hope to see ya'll there.

Oh,
Forgot to mention that I'm working on a 59 roadster (driver) I got last fall. Just need to finish paint touch-up, carpets, seats, brake lines, glass polish, trim, and a few other minor things. Already did the master cylinder, heater, clutch, transmission, wheels and tires, etc.
No problem.......:)
Cheers,

Gordon, I am still interested in the MG Car Club badge. How can I get it from you ?

Thanks

I won't be going, but I am enjoying this thread. Especially the photos. Enjoy the trip everyone.

Philip,
The Binghamton area is not large and has fairly light traffic, so your choice of lodging is not a big deal. Since I rarely stay in hotels locally I can't really recommend one over another. I've been told that the "gang" is planning to roll out about 8:00 AM on Sunday morning. Contact me at my home e-mail address for more detail if you'd like to.

Ken,
"Nothing" happened to the coupe...:)
That's why it's not coming...
Seriously, still working on getting ready for paint. But I really wanted a roadster to drive in the summer and got somewhat distracted by this lovely, but in need of work, driver. They make a great pair in the garage.
See ya there...

Gerry
G T Foster

Gerry - looking forward to seeing you too!

Only work on our A was to:
1. Replace the radiator cap that had melted its rubber in the heat of the Key West parade in April.
2. pull the dizzy and replace point and condenser, then reset the timing, taking it down a bit to avoid the near to overheating we saw in Key West.
Ken Doris

Ken,

I have found that retarding ignition timing increases overheating.
With such a variation in fuels these days, and also being different from that in the years the car was built, I think that factory settings are not of much use.
I always advance the ignition until it "pings" under load ("pinking" in some countries), then retard it a degree or two.

I will also be arriving late morning Sunday after a 5 to 6 hour drive thru the PA mountains. I've been busy with a few light mechanical issues, a full list of routine maintanence items and lots of primping and polishing. Somehow, 8 hours in my garage went by today. Its shining and ready to go!

Yesterday I added insulation to the toe and floorboards along with some rubber-backed carpeting. Along with the trans tunnel and heater shelf, the heat and noise reduction is incredible. It also fixed the engine compartment rattle that I couldn't track down.... Out of earshot, out of mind I guess :)
