MG MGA - Hand operated clutch
Couple of months ago I asked for any ideas on converting to an automatic as I had seriously damaged my left leg. Fortunately after two ops and 5 months down the line I now have enough movement in my knee so this is no longer an option. Still on crutches for the next couple of months though. However for anyone interested the only feasible professional solution could find in the Uk seemed to be something called the "duck clutch". Link below. http://www.brig-aydcontrols.co.uk/Duck-Clutch.htm Might be of help to someone in the future. Got the A started up today for the first time since the end of last summer. Apart from a sticking fuel pump and regulator cut-out, now fixed, everythings looking good. Pump still seems a bit slow with the fuel line disconnected from the carbs though. Chris |

Chris, great to hear that you're on the road to a full recovery. Thanks for the link and the straight forward thread title, it will make it much easier to search for in the archives. Unfortunately I'm sure this subject will come up again sometime. |

Thanks for the link. I've often wondered what I'd do if I damaged a limb - no more MGs or motorcycles. We could have used one of those about 20 years ago. My dad was on the roof of our chalet when the ladder broke. He took a fast ride off the roof and ended up with a broken left hoof and covered in silver paint. I remember him using a cane to walk, which he also used to press the clutch of his 59 'A. |

That looks like a great racing option. Is the actuator fast, or does it take a second or two to operate the clutch? |

Chris Prayers for a good recovery. A friend, Rand Smith, said there was an automatic from another MG, I think a sedan commonly availibe in the U.K., that is a bolt-in in the MGA. If you wnat more info I will track it down. Steve |

Steve, sounds like a trans from the Magnette and call I belive a mono- matic. From the reports I have read, it is not a great trans. This may have also been used on the Woolsey 44. |

The manumatic gearbox on the Magnette (and probably similar Wolseley, Riley and other Morris Oxford derivatives) is a manual gearbox with an automatic clutch. I've never seen one in real life, and I think that most have been swapped for conventional boxes. I don't know whether it is a straight swap into an A just because it came off a Magnette. I think it needs extra connections to the engine to get the operating power. cheers dan |

Thanks for the comments all. Jeff, I'll email you the brochures, the company that makes them, there is another more complicated system, is www.elap.co.uk. Steve, sounds like the manumatic. I did think briefly of the rare MGB automatic on a 5 bearing engine but that would have meant a major rebuild. Chris. |
