There is a matter of scale..personnally I find my car purchase ( $13000 for a whole reasonable condition car 25 yrs ago ) and its running cost make good value modern motoring .....

Sure, but it isn't 25 years ago, either. And ultimately, owning an MGA in this day and age has little to do with practicality (even though the MGA retains a lot of that), and everything to do with want. Clearly the guy wanted that hardtop pretty badly; it doesn't really matter if anyone else thinks he got his money's worth, or whether any of us would actually pay that much for one.

Slightly off track but I saw a Triumph TR6 gear knob sell on eBay a few weeks ago for £200. original ones are hard to find but £200 for a plastic knob !!
