MG MGA - Have body number only - Can bmht help?
From reading the archives, it appears that "some" Heritage certificates come back without the body number indicated due to gaps in production records. Here's my twist on the problem. If you only have the body number, has anyone ever heard of BMHT checking their records and being able to provide a Car Number? Whithin the limitations of any gaps in their records, of course. If their records have been computerized into a searchable database, this would be easy. If it's all still on paper, this would mean someone going through the ledgers manually. I've read that the bodies were built/delivered in batches, so some were out of sequence. The body number I'm trying to link is:- B12859 attached to a 1961? 1600 Roadster. Looking at the Register Database at http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgarh/ , the nearest number I see is (B?)12897 associated with Car GHNL80464. I've read about but never been able to track down a NAMGAR Database. Anyone got access? Any help gratefully accepted. Thanks, Derek |

Derek Have you checked the chassis cross member on the righthand side of the gearbox? The car number is apparently often found there, a few inches outboard of the tunneling. Mind you, I have not been able to find it there on mine, possibly too much surface corrosion in 50 years has worn it away - if it was ever there in the first place. Steve |

I contacted BMHT today, re another MGA. No chassis number, no deal, But you can go there and search the records yourself, you just have to book a reading room and they will get the books out. They said that only part the way through MGB's did they start to record engine numbers though. I got the feeling that none of it was automated... but they do answer email questions... They also said alot of records were lost.... Start here, email address at the bottom. http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/archive/certificate.html The bodies were made in batches if you look closely at the DB you mentioned above, so they are random compaired to the chassis.... well almost... So is there anyone going to Gaydon in the near future who could spend a bit of time in the reading room for me? I'd be willing to pay for your time. It's a bit far from here. |
