MG MGA - header and exhaust finish
What sort of finish have y'all put on a header? Is there a heat resistant powder coating? How have y'all painted the exhaust? How were they done from the factory? Safety fast! JMG |

John, if you are talking about the cast iron exhaust manifold most people sand blast and paint them with high temp paint, powder won't handle the heat. If you have a tubular header the best I have seen is to have it Jet Coated, I would imagine that it could be done to a stock manifold. You can find them on the web under Jetcoat.com |

John, This is what I used on mine. http://72.10.43.141/high_temp.htm I baked it in an old gas grill. So far it has held up fine. I used the flat aluminum color, but they do have a color that supposedly resembles new cast iron. I think there are high temp powder coatings now, and there are other outfits that will do a real ceramic coating. I have no experience with either. I don't believe there was any finish applied to the cast iron manifold at the factory. Jeff |

I had the exhaust manifold powder coated with a ceramic compound that is later buffed to a shine. The product is called "Cermakrome". It was applied locally by RLD Industries in Ottawa. They are on the web and you can probably find a similar product closer to your place. I have been very happy with the performance. It is rated for some 1500 degrees and after 3 years and more than 10000 miles, it has yet to change color or for any rust to come back. As far as the intake is concerned, I cleaned it up and painted it "aluminium" color with heat resistant paint. Karl |

John, Which header system did you end up with? j |

John The factory left the exhaust manifolds unpainted. Steve |

Jet-Hot coatings isn't that far from you (relatively speaking) in Pascagoula. My header is there right now getting a soaking in their cast iron grey colored stuff. Its guaranteed for 6 years with a free recoat if it discolors or rusts, with a lifetime guarantee from rust-through or they will repair it! How can you beat that, especially if you plan to keep your car for 30+ years! |

Steve is correct, factory manifolds were bare cast iron. That's why they turn such a lovely shade of "rust". I sandblasted mine and painted it with Eastwood's grey "Cast Iron" manifold paint. Looks great, seems to be holding up fine. Didn't cost a fortune. GTF |
