MG MGA - Headlamp adjustment
I got hold of some new Cibie headlamps for my MGA over last winter as one of the final planned performance upgrades for my car.
They seem to be much brighter and work well but, apart from switching them on and off, I haven't actually driven with them in the dark yet. I wondered if anyone has any suggestions about adjusting the beam heights, ideally that can be carried out in my garage. I know that most people use their garage door to project their headlamps onto, but my drive slopes downwards towards my garage door and so the only level surface available to me is the garage floor. Colin. The procedure for adjusting the headlights is in the factory workshop manual (which I do not have to hand right now). The last time that a friend and I had to adjust the lights on our MGAs, we found a parking lot that was flat and had a wall that we could project the lights onto. Using the figures in the workshop manual, we taped a couple of sheets of papers at the required height and distance, then aligned the headlights to them. It seemed to work well at the time. Today, I would simply take the lights to a mechanic having the proper test instruments and have the headlights aimed in a more accurate fashion than can be done by myself. But, the old way worked just fine the one time I needed to use it.

Colyn Depends on how big your garage is -or not How far can you push your car back/forward while still on the flat- Also- down on the bottom of your Cibie headlight glass there should be some numbers--Have a look there it's usually the bottom number in a box, should be somewhere between 0 and maybe 1.5max.--what have you got there. |
