MG MGA - Headlamp Trim Ring

Does the back of the headlamp trim ring (last piece to go on) rest against the rubber gasket that is behind the headlamp bucket (in which case the edge of the gasket can be seen) or does it rest against the metal of the front fender (the edge of the rubber bucket gasket won't be seen)?

The screw hole in the trim ring does not line up with the clip on the bucket. The bucket gasket is too large on the OD or the clip for the screw is on the wrong side of the bucket (its on the back now).

Thanks,

George

I’m pretty sure the trim ring should rest against the rubber gasket. I use an awl to line up the hole in the trim ring with the clip on the bucket.

Jim,
If that's the case, you can see the edge of the gasket between the fender and the trim ring on your car?

If you have new buckets and new trim rings, you need to adjust the wedges at the top of the bucket to make the rings fit. Use a pair of pliers to bend them down a little, then you will find that the ring will snap into place and stay there without a screw.

If you have trim rings from SF / NOS, you may well find they are slightly smaller than the originals (that was my experience, confirmed by a flyer in the box saying this was intentional !) In that case you will have a choice to fettle the buckets much more, or buy rims that are the correct size elsewhere.

Yes, you can see the edge of the gasket. I’ll attach a picture of mine later. I’m not at home right now.

George,
Here’s a picture of one of my headlight trim rings. If it’s wrong, I’m sure someone will point it out but I think it’s correct.

Dominic, I'm using my original buckets and trim rings. I can see if the buckets can be adjusted to accept the trim ring without having to use the screw, that's an interesting idea.

Jim, that's how mine will look, so I guess I'm on the right track.

Thanks all.
