MG MGA - Heat Shield
Has anyone used the heat shield noted below to reduce heat tranferred from the the floor boards from the exhaust. (referenced by part number 21 in the link below) Years ago I made my own shield, but at the very rear of the cockpit the gap is only 1/2" between the shield and the frame and I find it rattles against that frame when I go over bumps and when I turn the car off. http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29233 |

Yes. It is not original equipment, but I have one on my car anyway. It is a sheet metal part with a thin sheet of insulation to be screwed to the underside of the plywood floor under the left side seat. It is not much of a heat barrier, but is intended to prevent burning of the floor board when the rear exhaust hanger fails (which can make the center pipe bow upward to touch the floorboard). |

Barney, I've checked the rear hanger on my car. It seems OK but I'm going to replace anyway. As I said the exhaust pipe seems to have at least 1/2" of play (probably more) when I go over bumps and when I shut the motor off. Can that be a sign of bad engine mounts? |

Engine has rubber mounts, and the pipe moves with the engine when it wobbles. |

I wouldn't bother. I have a small muffler fitted under the driver's seat and have never had a problem with heat - and it'd a lot closer to the floor than the standard pipe. The car is a LOT quieter as a result of the second muffler. I also have a mild steel rear muffler because I got fed up with replacing SS ones every few years because they had ceased to provide any muffling at all. |
