MG MGA - Help identifying SU fuel pump
Hi all, I've acquired this pump on eBay. It's a LP pump rather than HP but I am hoping it will be ok to use in an emergency on my Mark I 'A' to get me home (I do some European trips and want to carry a spare and haven't got the know-how to convert to HP). My car is positive earthed but I am unsure if the pump is +ive or -ive earthed itself. 1. Are there any clues from the attached image? 2. It hasn't got a condenser which I am not sure if it should? Thanks Jason |

Jason - If it is a low pressure pump, it will not a) have a capacitor in it and b) probably not serve as a backup pump for your car. For starters, the low pressure pump was designed to be mounted in the engine compartment at the same height as the carburetors and does not have sufficient pressure to push the fuel from the bottom of the tank to the carburetors in anywhere near the volume that a B series engine needs. Secondly, no points style pump should be used as a back up pump because during long periods of inactivity, the points will film over to the extent that when you need the pump, it won't run. a better choice for a backup pump is one of the after market electronic pumps, such as the Facet mounted near the original pump, plumbed in series with the pump and with a switch that can switch power to one pump or the other. See the article, Backup fuel pump in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ Cheers - Dave |
