MG MGA - Help with Tranny Rear Oil Seal

Got the tranny out on the workbench while rebuilding the engine. Really don't want to open up the tranny but feel I should at least replace the oil seals. Front seal was no problem, but how do I get the real flange (1600) off so I can replace the rear seal?
Thanks for your time and suggestions,

Use an impact driver with the appropriate socket.

Or,

Bolt everyting up to the engine put the tranny in gear and use a breaker bar.

Good luck getting the seal itself out without removing the rear housing. It's a bear on a mk2. I ended up using a dremel tool to cut the metal flange off the seal (not the drive flange) and removing it in pieces. This was all done with the rear housing off of the tranny. Not sure how you would do it with the tail shaft in the way.

The replacement seal goes in easily.

Good Luck!

A work to the wise, rebuild the trans, by putting in all new syncro's, layshaft bearings, and I belive it's called the layshaft not the gears. The work to do this is about 3 hours. To put the trans back in without rebuilding it and then driving the car and find out you should have done it is a real pain in the tush as you have to remove the engine again.

I have to agree that it is wise to rebuild the gearbox while you have it out. When I had mine out, I just replaced the seals because looking thru the side cover everything looked great inside. Not long after reinstalling it, the second gear syncro started to go. Now I have to pull the engine again to do something I should have done when I had it out before.

To Jeff Schultz from an old fellow "Tarheel" (Grew up in Greensboro!): if the car is "Jumping out of 2ND" into neutral IT MIGHT NOT BE THE 2ND GEAR SYNCHROS GOING! If this is your problem, before you pull the tranny, see my note on a FREE DO-IT-YOURSELF FIX under the recent "pops out of gear" thread. Cheers!

Thanks. I wish there were a simple fix, but the problem is grinding when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. It is not too bad now, but I know it will just get worse. I will pull it this winter and rebuild it.

Jeff Schultz

Thanks for your input... decided to bit the bullet and open up the tranny.
