MG MGA - hidden key

When I bought my '59 coupe (barn find/ebay) it didn't come with a key but while fiddling around under the dash I found a small black vinyl case with a brass snap attached to one of the heater cables with a brass key that fit the door and ignition.

Has anyone else unexpectedly found a spare key under their dash or anywhere else?

No, never found a key but I did find a toy matchbox MG TD in the bottom of the gas tank! I was wondering what the rattle was when I took the tank off and out she came.

I found a spare key duct taped to the back of the rear bumper. I didn't have another one either.

Randy- Is your coupe the one that was for sale on ebay from New York last June? If so just wondering as my coupe is just 14 cars newer. Gary

I believe that from the factory the original spare keys were placed in the engine compartment next to the heater box on the left hand side. Found one there when I cleaned up the heater shelf of my Mk2.

I thought I knew my 57 coupe pretty well. But I read a similar post several months ago about the spare key on the heater box. So I went looking, and there it was. Fastened down with one of the heater box mounting screws on the LH side.

Mine was in a barn in Dinuba, CA (near Fresno) before it was offered on ebay. Its a '59 Number 60315.

Randy,

Found a spare key for our 59 A stuck to the back of the dash, only found it when I was removing it for replacement.

Found a spare ignition key for our 76 B screwed under the inside of the engine compartment. It was so well hidden that I only found it when I replaced the engine.

Seems to be an MG Owners thing to hide a spare key on the car somewhere.
