MG MGA - High pitch rattle
Looking for suggestions for the possible cause of a high pitch rattle. The noise starts at about 2250 rpm upwards and takes the form of a high pitch rattle, almost a squeal. Noise occurs with clutch in or out so probably not the thrust bearing and with the car moving or stationary so probably not pinking. Its a 5 bearing 1800 engine and everything appears to be correctly tightened I have removed the fan belt to isolate the water pump and dynamo with no change I await you suggestions |

I had a mystery rattle that turned out to be the carburettor overflow pipe rubbing on the chassis. |

Smack the engine, inner fender, radiator with your fist to see if something rattles. Heat shield, fan shroud, fuel pipe, radiator overflow pipe, oil cooler pipes or clips, throttle or choke brackets, head pipe clamp on exhaust, something in the air cleaners. Starter motor Bendix drive may rattle at high frequency when the thing is not turning. |
