MG MGA - High starter tunnel question for MGA
I have a tunnel built for a low starter 1500 motor, my coupe will have an 1800g engine. I have seen pictures of the high starter tunnels, is the extension a metal piece or rubber? I ordered what I thought was the extension but it seems to be a rubber cover for something more substantial. Can the existing tunnel be modifed to use this starter? Would a modern high output starter be a better answer? thanks |

David, a high output starter will do the job, check with high torque starters (spelling?). You can still use your low starter tunnel. Just have the gear on the flywheel turned round as this starters are pushing not pulling their gear. Siggi |

David When I modified my 1500 to a 5-speed and 1800 engine, the conversion kit came with metal tunnel extension piece to weld/rivet/screw into place. I also had to cut the tunnelling and do a small amount of woodworking to the appropriate floorboard. I continued to use the 1500 starter motor without any problem. For right hand drive cars this modification makes it difficult (impossible?)to remove/fit the the starter motor without also removing the oil filter. I understand it is less of a problem with your LHD set-up. Steve |

Hi David, Scarborough Faire (401-724-4200)offers the metal piece which you will weld onto the tunnel, then the rubber piece is glued over it. Chris |

Thanks for the replies everyone, Chris I will give them a call Monday. I have their 9th edition catalog and did not see it in there. Thanks for the tip... |
