MG MGA - how do SU electronic fuel pumps fail?
I reinstalled an electronic SU fuel pump that was working about 7 years ago on the car. It did not tick when I turned on the ignition to test the new wiring harness, using a 6-8 amp battery charger. I do have power to the pump, verified by a test light. When putting the charger leads directly on the pos and neg posts of the pump, all I hear is a slight high pitch sound with the charger drawing 1 amp. Any ideas as to a fix, or should I just replace it? Thanks! George |

I'd put a points pump back in, but that's just my opinion. Electronic pumps usually fail suddenly and without warning. |

George, the charger may be putting out a considerable DC ripple voltage, if the smoothing capacitors are gone or inadequate. Try the battery. |

Thanks Art, I'll try the battery on the fuel pump. |

How do they fail? As Steve said.............suddenly. Mine just decided to literally "melt down". Fortunately I have a Facet wired in and could easily switch over. Despite it being 5 years old, Berlin weren't interested. |
