MG MGA - How to add a breather tube?

On the return trip for Ohio we needed to add a quart of oil every 200 miles!

Upon looking at the engine we now lack a breather tube.

New air filters Moss numbers 223-295 and a new Moss valve cover 224-508 both lack the hole for a breather tube.

While I understand the bling under the bonnet, how do we go about adding a breather tube.

Anyone done this before?

Thank

I just ground the ribs flat in the original area on the valve cover. Drilled and tapped for 1/4" pipe thread (I think) and added a brass barb fitting. The original hose slipped right on. (oh yeah, remove the valve cover first to prevent aluminum bits from fallin in)

As for the chrome cleaners..... I can't help you there because I used the OEM housings. But you may be able to improvise there with a bulkhead mount hose barb. Move the location a bit further inward from the original location or you may have to "modify" the air filter element.

I messed about with breather tubes for a couple of years before biting the bullet and doing what was needed, valve stem oil seals. My oil consumption was about the same as yours.

I have K N filters and drilled a suitable hole in the back of the front filter and fitted the feed from the old filters a brass barb fitting with 1/4" thread was OK . My Rocker cover allready had the hose attachment but you can fit the same adapter to the cover and just connect a hose between the two - alternatively you can buy a breather cap for the rocker box oil filler which will allow the crankcase to vent

I have two breathers on the tappet covers, and a breather cap on the valve cover. It doesn't leak any oil from there, but still drips from the gearbox and axle drain holes. The job this weekend (it's raining here) is to tackle those two, and also trace the leak that is leaving MMO on the floor too. The car is due its 5-yearly safety check soon, and oil leaks are a test item too....

I followed Barney's advice, following a controversal set-up on mine. Totally original now. Clean rocker box, no milky looking substances inside the cap, no oily smells in the car and I never have to top up between annual oil changes.
