MG MGA - Hydraulic Seals
I hope you guys don't mind me posing this query here as it is not directly MGA related although it is for a car jack. I know I will get a sensible answer from you experts
I have just acquired a DWS side lift jack like this one: http://www.classic-british-car-jacks.uk/Miscellaneous%20Jacks.htm#DWS All the seals are totally shot. When I pulled the jack apart all I had was bits of seals (1930s jack) fall out. The seals are conical, much like the MGA MG MC seals. But that's all I can tell you. From the photo can you tell me which way round they should go on the shaft? I also have a similar problem with the pumping piston. Diagram to follow. Thanks Steve |

I tried to open the link Steve but it said that access was forbidden. Maybe you need to be a member of that group to be able to open it, or maybe it is just a faulty link. Cheers Colyn PS. Are you going to be at MGA Day this year? Its at the Shuttleworth Collection on Sunday 11th August. |

That link may not work. Try this: https://tinyurl.com/y3vwdn47 |

Colyn The Tiny URL link works. I think the issue is something to with the '%' signs that occasionally appears in some of my website links. Any advice from programmers welcome. I think it is something to do with spaces between words. Hope to make 11 August. In the planner for HWMBO to vet! My other issue is trying to find seals for the jacks. I have 3 feelers out at the moment. If anyone can offer leads I would much appreciate it. Steve |

The cups face the pressure, hence the pressure pushes the cups "open", making them fit tightly against the cylinder bore. Just like the cup washer in a foot pump or bicycle pump. |

I'm not a programer but I know spaces between words that can cause problems. The photo of my Spridget jack is still in the database, which reminds me I must try to sell it/pass it on. |

Thanks Allan. I was assuming that was the case with the one immediately facing the incoming pressure. I wasn't sure about the second (lower) one. I am guessing that answers my other question about the 2 similar seals on the pumping piston. Why 2 seals? is it standard engineering practice? Steve |
Steve Gyles |
"Why 2 seals? is it standard engineering practice?" Since it's British, they knew the first one would leak!! :) Jim |

Three computers on a Boeing 737 I believe...............American processors eh?? Fairly common I would think Steve! |

Nice one Jim. Mind you, according to my accident report I ejected from my McDonnel Douglas Phantom 2 because of a leaky seal! Steve |

I have scoured the UK for the correct size seals for my hydraulic jack without success until a few days ago. I have found an engineering company in the Midlands that will make seals to any size you want. My order is in and I will see what I get back. Just wondering if they will make better seals than the standard stuff for the MGA master cylinder. Steve |

Thought I would report back about the seal supplier/maker in the Midlands who has come up trumps for me. If any of you require seals that are not readily available for your motoring project then this is a company well worth considering: M Barnwell Seal Services. www.barnwell.co.uk
I only required a small number of seals for my 2 hydraulically operated jacks. I supplied the various measurements and samples of the worn out ones. Within 4 days I had them back. Beautifully made and spot on. For such a small order I was surprised that they only cost £2.50 each plus vat. Very proactive and nice people to deal with. Responses to emails were almost immediate every time. Steve |

Great to hear of good service from a company, thank you. |
