MG MGA - Hydraulics
Hi guys: Drove my A yesterday and the clutch seem to have a long throw. Today I tried to drive it again and it would only go into reverse. Checked the master cylinder and it is dry as a bone. Where do I start? I suspect there is a leak in a hose someplace and I don't believe I can just fill the master cylinder with more fluid. The brakes will have to be bled. I have never done this before. Help!!!! Thanks Dick |

Dick, start with inspecting all the hoses. Check the master cylinder where the push rods enter for fluid leakage. Check for leakage at the clutch slave cylinder. Look for signs of leakage at each wheel, pull each brake drum and check the wheel cylinders/calipers. Check the brake pipes and fittings. If your master cylinder is dry, the amount of fluid that has leaked should be enough to help find the wet spot. |

Check: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/hydraulics/ht1.htm Barney's sight will provide you with all sorts of information. I had the same thing happen to me earlier this year. Problem was traced to a leaking rear wheel cylinder. Both the brake and clutch lines will need to be bled. It might be a good time to rebuild the master cylinder and replace wheel cylinders and flex lines (3 brake, one clutch). Though unrelated to your current poblem, check the clutch pedal clevis pin hole for wear as well. You will most likely find the hole to look more oval than round. Barney's sight also has a repair procedure for that. Keep coming back to this web site if you have questions. Good luck. Don Carlberg |
