MG MGA - ign final thoughts
Now that I uderstand where Barney is coming from my conclusions are that the correct timing for a B series engine is 32-34% at approx 3500rpm and work back from there. If the distributor is in good order the static will be 12 to 14 % Useing 98 octane petrol and if the head is free of carbon build up and hot spots and is not over heating ,approx. 200% plus, the car should pull well and rev out cleanly. I also understand that a B engine is designed to operate at approx. 190% to ensure maximum gas expansion to push the piston down. A 185% thermostat sees to this, the radiator does the rest, ie., puts a ceiling on the tempeture. In Australia independent reserch reports that Caltex is best for power and economy and BP is the cleanest. With the extra gas milage from Caltax premium I found it is false economy not to use it. I also remember, that in another life, tuning cars like Alfas, Fiat 1100s etc,. that if the mechanical advance was not on its' way by 1000rpm the car would be sluggish. Slacking the primary spring was the seat of the pants fix. Sean |
