MG MGA - Ignition Timing
Hi Chaps, Now that Spring is in the air here in the UK, I have been giving my A it's regular pre-season check over and tune. I had always been running around with the ignition timing at 15 deg btdc as set with my timing light. But having recently read through Barney's pages on tuning, I reset the spark to 20 deg, and, guess what, she runs better. However, Barney's data is for the 1500 engine I think, which the workshop manual quotes as 7 deg static, whereas my engine (no 1312) is the 1622 which is quoted as 10 deg static in the manual. Question for Barney is - does your recommendation of 20 deg btdc hold good for the 1622 too, or could I advance it a few more degrees without doing any damage? Question for other 1622 owners - what have you set your timing to? Many thanks, AB |

Set the timing via total advance ie., 32/34% on 98 oct. Static depends on the advance mechanical type, some need 14% some 20% but the most important is total at around 3500rpm ,vacumn disconnected |
