We make improved seals for the MGA. The last thing you want to do is to dismantle the front suspension to replace poor quality trunnion seals. We can provide the following:

Declan, What type of rubber do you use for your seals?
People are aware that Moss, for example, use the wrong rubber specification for their seals and this is why they are so poor.

How can they be ordered?...................Mike

Mike,
It depends on the application. For exposed seals, such as suspension components, we lay the emphasis on resistance to grease, oil and especially to ozone which is one of the main reasons for premature deterioration of most of the repro parts. Rocker cover seals are subject to higher temperatures and oil.

I really need a set of these seals, I have used some self-amalgamating tape on my king-pins to replace the "new" seals which dissolved away after 18 months.
I have a brand new set in my spares cupboard which are deteriorating already and are not worth fitting.
I think there is a big demand for these Declan.

Most of these seals fail due to overgreasing and the use of a high pressure grease gun. The original grease guns were only a small hand held weak spring unit that didn't generate much pressure and didn't cause the rubber to split.

I disagree about them failing because of grease gun pressure. That doesn't turn them to goo. I have changed three sets in the last few months on different cars, and they were all just as if there was no seal at all - and on my own car I know that wasn't the case.

There's no indication what the price or material of these new supplier is. I would have put that as a basic item on a website if I was wanting to sell direct ! The last ones I have bought from the usual suspects are all substantially thicker than the "goo" rubber ones I have had in the more distant past. I even resorted to buying some, greasing them and putting them in a drawer for two years to check the quality before fitting.

I will discuss the chemical composition with Hans Dieter and we will decide if it is to be revealed or not. It might be counter productive and could lead to the Bryan Adams effect-"Waking up the neighbours!".
They will be introduced on Hans Dieters website in the near future. Pricing is 3 Euro per seal on private sales obviously with a discount for the full set.

There is no excuses re grease guns, etc., I do a good mileage and probably excessively grease (just to be sure) but my seals are fine after at least 30 years.

Paul, 30 years is amazing! Can you remember who supplied them?

After trying two sets of Moss seals consecutively and finding that they barely lasted 12 months each I spoke to Cecelia at SF who said her seals were made from nitrile rubber compared with the natural rubber of Moss seals so I bought a set. They have now been on the car four to five years and although the car has not seen much weather I looked at them last month and they are showing signs of cracking. One of the kingpin seals has split from top to bottom .
So I will probably get a new set from Declan even though the duration of his testing is limited...................Mike

I am pretty sure that I haven't dismantled the king pin assembly since my 1976-1979 rebuild so they almost certainly go back to then. They probably came from Motobuild, Toulmin, Simon Robinson, or even a BMC dealer. It is too early for Moss.

Of course no of this really helps you except to show what is/was achievable. I won't be changing them in a rush!!

I agree with Dominique, it's not over greasing. I too have changed seals 3 times, even before the body is on the chassis. On my other A, the BMC supplied seals are still going after 30+ years so it must be the current materials being used.
