MG MGA - Input Shaft Bearing Noise

After reviewing the archives I have a determined that I probably have a failing input shaft bearing. My symptom is a whirring sound that is present in neutral and increases with the revs of the engine, but that stops when the clutch pedal is depressed. The clutch components are all in good shape with few miles on them and the pedal travel is properly adjusted. Since this a "spare" transmission I am 99.9% sure that the fault lies with it, and not any other components. Some have stated that the input shaft bearing can last for quite a while even after they start making this noise. Is this really the case?

Mark,

A few years back I rebuilt two MGA 1500 Transmissions and replaced all bearings. The input bearings on both were just fine but I put new ones in anyway. (My real objective was the Syncro Rings and the Layshaft and bearings. Both needed replacement.)

Those input bearings had no problems but it doesn't mean that you may have one that is bad. I know of no chronic "input bearing" problems. But, I am just a "Hobby mechanic", --take my advise with caution!!!

That noise could easily be caused by the mainshaft spigot needle rollers & shaft worn. This will mean the dismantling of the box & sleeving the mainshaft & new needle rollers 8G2404 x 18. It could also be the laygear needle bearings as the layshaft moves with the 1st motion shaft. See my posting answer on MGB technical site.
