MG MGA - Input Shaft Movement

I purchased the Five Speed Sierra gearbox. While preparing to shorten the clutch release guide sleeve, I noticed the input shaft has some movement from side to side/up and down. The movement is about 2mm to 2.5mm with the clutch release bearing guide sleeve removed.
This was measured with a pointer attached to the most forward end of the input shaft. Is this amount of movement acceptable?

Some movement is normal, the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft supports the shaft when the trans is installed. Your movement does not seem excessive.
