MG MGA - Installing 1600 disk brakes on a 1500
I am getting ready to install a set of 1600 Lockheed disk brakes in place of the drums on my ’59 1500. Before I tear into the car to do the swap I have several questions. First, for the large bolt that holds the caliper halves together, is a lock washer used or a high strength flat washer with thread lock (left image of attached)? Second, do I have the correct bracket attached to the caliper. I am presuming that the attached picture (right side image) is for the right side, viewed from the outside looking aft. Third question is in regard to the MGA style friction stop and sleeve fitted in the MGA pistons. Take a peek at Barney’s explanation and an illustration here, http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/brakes/bt104a.htm . I have a set of MGA stainless steel pistons (really expensive if bought retail) and the calipers still have the pins installed. I don’t have the friction stops and sleeves for the pistons. So do I; 1. Leave the pins in and install the MGA pistons without the friction stops and sleeves 2. Remove the pins and install the MGA pistons without the friction stops and sleeves 3. Remove the pins and install the MGB style pistons I would prefer to avoid modifying these original brake calipers but am concerned that the pistons might bind without the friction stops and sleeves. Thanks, John |

The friction stop sleeves are not required. Since you already have the MGA type pistons, you can go ahead and assemble them without the friction sleeve parts. It will work exactly as all of the MGB calipers. |
