MG MGA - Installing motor mounts

I need to install new front motor mounts on my 56 1500 roadster. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best procedures.
Terry Marcus

Terry, You need to jack the motor under the sump, remove all the securing nuts, then jack up gradually and remove one at a time. The only problem is tight spaces. You may need short lenth spanners or the modern ratcheting end wrenches.
Art Pearse

Terry,

While you are at it, check the steel mounting brackets that mount to the engine to be sure they are square. Over time they tend to bend down which has the effect of lowering the engine.

I Concur with JJB's comment about the bent brackets. Mine had bent so much that there was insufficient clearance between the crankshaft pulley and crossmember to replace the fan belt.

Steve

PS. Engine rebuilt since the photo and now looks pristine.

Steve Gyles

Hi Terry, I did as Art describes a year or so ago - fairly straight forward job taking me an afternoon - make sure you put the earthing strap back - see Steve's top photo.

Just to slip back into this thread, when raising the engine, is it best to remove the exhaust at the manifold connection, and secondly, can you do the change on the LH mount with the carb's in place?
Gary Lock

Gary-
Check for cracks at the bend, make sure they are square. Check that the single bottom bolt to the block is tight and that the bracket is not broken around that bolt. Be certain that the bottom bolt is long enough, but not bottoming in the blind hole - a common thing especially if the washers are left off, which leads to broken brackets. This was a common failure (more so on late MGB); I used to fit heavy washers on the bolt, welded in place if the bracket was broken there. Quite possible that a broken RH bracket is the cause of your gearbox/exhaust misalignment.
We never took carbs or exhaust off to do this; you are not raising the engine far enough.

Hi Gary - I left the exhaust connected but found it easier to slide the carbs off (still all interconnected)to make access a bit more open although it can be done without.
Cam Cunningham

Hi Terry did your crank handle line up ok ? Even without bent brackets and new mounts I still had not enough clearance over the steering rack and raised the engine by fitting two shims used on the twin cams to sort their alaignment problem. Sean
