MG MGA - Interior material

Seasons greetings to all,

My 1600 Coupe came with the original drivers door panel (red) in pretty decent shape, passenger door panel missing. I requested and was sent samples of materials from SF, Moss and VB. None come close in either color or grain to what was original. Any one know where material or kits can be had that more closely resembles the original?

I have an original side screen bag. Their vinyl matches this very well.

I understand your problem. I had the same problem on my early production MGB. I had original interior panels, and wanted to match seats to them. Nothing from the usual suppliers came even close in color or grain. I ended up going to a local trim shop who made me some seat kits in the right color and grain exactly as original. He used a Moss kit for a pattern and it is exactly as OEM. Try a local trim shop. A good one can get pretty close. They have access to a lot of colors and grains. I hope this helps.

Heritage Trim and upholstery in Vancouver supposedly does a very nice job matching original materials, grain, etc. You might give them a try.

Robert:

Remember that the color of your originals have probably faded significantly over the years from when new. I have visited Scarborough Faire from time to time to pick-up my orders. Cecilia has shown me an original MGA red seat cover that they keep around. The outside, wearing surfaces of the seat cover were very much duller, more orange, in color than the unexposed areas. The unexposed areas were bright red and a match to SF's new red interior kits. So, I think that color-wise, SF offers a close match to what "new" MGA upholstery looked like, but probably not a match to a 50-year faded surface.

Grain is another matter which, of course, depends on the supplier's source for materials. The original vinyl materials do seem grainier that what is offered today.

Good luck,

Heritage "does not" have MGA Coupe interiors available. I asked and was told at present time there is not enough demand to do a full scale pattern layout.
