MG MGA - into the dark side
Apologies to the purists, but here is a video of me driving my MGA that I swapped a turbo Nissan DOHC engine into. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USFDj7bak3E Darian |

Are you still having trouble getting the windscreen wipers to park? Mick |

Hi Darian Looks like a bunch of fun. Couple of questions come to mind: 1. What makes the strange chirruping noise as you change gear 2. At the end when you show the engine compartment there's a worrying metal on metal tinging noise like something hitting the fan - is that a normal noise, and can't you find it and fix it? 3. What are the gauges from? 4. When are you going to be able to try it in some mountains or hills? Are there any in Texas???? It looks like a great conversion - one that should be documented a bit so others could follow the same route. Hope it's going to be reliable and a real blast to drive for a long time to come I'd still keep hold of the original mechanical bits in case you ever decide to return it to stock - by then the bits may be very hard to find...... Hi Mick, My wipers have been broken for about a year now. Some day I'll get around to fixing them, but I only drive on nice days. Hi Dominic, Here's a few answers. 1) That's the turbo spooling down. The CA18DET didn't originally come with a blow off valve. 2) Not sure which sound you're talking about. My belt is noisy sometimes. Also, I have a cheap electric fan on the radiator, so that might be it. 3) The gauges are from a small company called TPI http://www.tpigauges.com/. They're a lot cheaper than some gauges, and better in my opinion. 4) No mountains in Texas. We've got some pretty good roads in the hills about 30 minutes from my house, but I have to find someone willing to hold the camera while I drive... The car is a lot of fun to drive. I need to reinforce the rear end though, since it doesn't handle the torque well on turns if I hit the gas really hard. A write-up is in the works. Darian |

Your custom fuel tank is eventually going to crack/break because of the way it is mounted. Tanks are normally mounted by suspending in straps, because that spreads the weight of the fuel out over a larger area of the tank's surface. The mounts on your tank concentrate these substantial loads in just a few tiny locations, which combined with the aluminum material they are made out of, makes a failure almost inevitable. Given enough time in service and vibration, the metal will sooner or later work harden around the mounts and crack. |
