MG MGA - Is all as it appears?

There is a beautiful MK11 on E-Bay right now.

The VIN plate looks like a Reproduction to me.
#1 The black background is running, wrinkling. I thought the black was not paint originally just on the reproduction plates.
#2 the vin number is missing the L.
#3 I own the MK11 eleven numbers earlier in production and my plate is stamped like this : GHNL2/102154. There is a backslash after the 2 and before the serial #.
#4 the screws holding it on are slotted not phillips.
I would be glad to photograph my VIN plate and e-mail to any interested in comparison. When the price gets this high the car should match the plate.

Items not original?
Are carburetors wrong or just the fuel lines. There are no banjo bolts at carbs? Where are choke cables?
Plastic fan.
Plastic oil cap.
Ignition "switch" not key
Mix and match swith knobs some old some new.
No stamping on heater tags that are screwed on not pop riveted.
Wrong heat shield used as throttle bracket
Throttle bracket missing
Wrong coil. Wrong coil mount?
No valve adjust spec brass tag
1500 style brake master top
Wrong hose clamps on everything
Radio? Antennae wrong.
oil filter modified to spin on
Over flow added to radiator
Do brake rotors look small Like a B conversion?
The rotor look small enough for 14 inch wheels?
Because of all the B type engine accessories I would like to see a picture of the 1622 on the block.
"Caveat Emptor"
Also look at the paint below the master cylinder, that is why we sould all use Silicon fluid.
I have sent the seller an E-mail about the VIN # and am waiting for a responce.

I'm confused a bit. I can't open e-bay here at work so I can't get a look at the car, but you start out your thread with "there's a beautiful MkII" and then procede to pick at lots of detail items. Is the seller representing this car as something it's not? It's certainly not an original unmolested car, but then you don't say how he lists it. As a 'restoration' it sounds about average as far as attention to the small details goes, just a very nice looking driver. Don't know about the price, but if it's not worth it to someone then it won't sell. The last time I checked there wasn't a law that said unless a car is 100% perfect you can't ask over a certain price. There are lots of folks out there with more "dollars than sense" as shown by some of the recent auction sales, if you like it and can afford it, buy it.

The carbs are B, the fan is something else (but a good idea). The gearbox is also B judging by the trim around the gearstick, so it would not be a surprise to find the drive train and suspension is all B. The upward facing filter also indicates a B engine.

A used car dealer is listing this car as:
"1962 MGA 1600 MK11 PRISTINE CONDITION SIMPLY THE BEST"
He includes a insurance appraisal from 1999 for $25000.00 that states: "CAR HAS UNDERGONE COMPLETE CHASSIS UP COSMETIC & MECHANICAL RESTORATION TO A BETTER THAT ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER STANDARD"

I started questioning the VIN plate and the Numbers on it. Asking others opinions as to it's accuracy.
As I continued looking at the listing I got carried away noticing "annomalies" It is sort of like the picture puzzles that ask what is wrong with this picture?

This car looks great and sounds like a great daily driver. The only thing in his description that I feel is wrong is "100 point car". My car is not all original but it is a great daily driver with the 1800 engine and a Ford 5 speed trans. I still have the original engine and trans, but my car shows great unless someone wants to pick it to death why and which parts are not original. Some people just want a nice looking car just to drive and ENJOY and some people want a car to be a trailer QUEEN.

Better nick than mine. Body looks great. Gaps look spot on. Everything else is cosmetic and recoverable to original if that is what you want. Depending on the reserve price I would certainly consider it if I was in the market.

The attempt wasn't to criticize the car , though the car does not meet it's description. The attempt was to gather opinions on whether the VIN# could be real. I think the VIN# is fraudulent and should impact the cars value. A numbers question of this type would keep the car off a reputable auction. It is obvious that the seller doesn't care about the missing letter in the VIN. It is also obvious that buyers don't see it as a problem as, though it is still below reserve, it has 22 bids and is up to $22,400.00.
