MG MGA - is it me ?

Hi all, is it me or is this really worth this much

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C134829/

nice enough car but appears to be wrong colour wing piping, fuel and temp gauge back to front, old style , flat profile front bumper, I bet the grill is an old repro as well

Gordon ( just envious)

Gordon

I was only able to view one photograph. What is the trick to see others?

It is stated as a 1956 1600. Something amiss there.

Steve
Steve Gyles

Steve, click on the dealers website under the picture and you can see the other pictures in the stock list. Certainly should be a 1500, early speedo and tacho gauges too.

I agree with Gordon, it should be correct to original specification when described as concours and offered at this price.

definitely one of the old repro grilles. No original sidescreens, incorrect radio blanking plate, ignition switch in fact all the dash switches are the repro type.

Under the bonnet there are the wrong air cleaners and a whole host of incorrect details; hoses clips colours etc. Same in the boot. Then there is the non original colour scheme.

There is no doubt that someone has built a stunning car that looks absolutely fabulous. But original or concours it certainly is not.

Anyone notice that the master cylinder is in the LHD position, and the rest of car appears to be RHD?...thats something new!
Gary Lock

Hi I believe when they first sold it I remember it being LHD and that is probably an old photo they have used
about £10K overpriced ?

Gordon
g c pugh

Gary - that's interesting. How do the pedals connect to the m/c then?
Graham V

I've been thinking about the linkage to the m/c also. I can't believe anyone would want such an extended linkage. There must be movement losses in the linkage due to the heavy braking torque on the pedal? Maybe this has been done before but I've never seen it other than on accelerator pedals.

There seem to be some MGA big prices out there just now, which is strange considering the so called credit crunch. I have seen quite a few roadsters between £22000 and £28000 admittedly in really top condition.
Is that people are more wiiling to invest in classic cars, which do seem to increase in value at a fairly consistant rate, rather than a building society or a bank account?
I suppose that the big advantage of investing in a classic MGA instead of the stock market is that, if the market crashes, you still have a fantastic MGA to drive instead of some worthless stocks and share cerificates
At this rate we will all be employing security guards to protect our MGAs and only ever drive them in armed convoys!!

It is a lovely car advertised, obviously a 1500 originally, you think they would have mentioned the RHD conversion (ex USA car?) Can you call it concours if it has been converted like this?

My guess is that it will sell, it looks fantastic.

Im so pleased I bought my car when I did 2 years ago as I probably would not be able to justify spending £28000 to buy it today.

Kind of a mish mash of parts. Pretty car but not concours in any galaxy. For $45,000.00

Shall we play "what is wrong with this picture?"
OR "Why it's not Concours"
The car must be considered an early 1500 for this game.
1600 front lights but no 1600 cowl badge?
No rubber seal around the boot lid?
1500 taillights and 1600 badge on the boot lid look quite odd.
Chrome horn/speaker surround.
MBG radio plate
Vin tag in wrong place
No patent plate, unless it is under the VIN tag.
Wrong valve cover
Wrong air filters
Bonnet and boot stays are red not the correct black.
Bumper and grill
Black fender welting
Not OE color, too pretty a red to be original.
T stat housing, intake manifold, heat shield and head nuts not painted engine color.
Fuel line and carb vent lines copper
exhaust pipe at wrong angle
Round 1600 style side curtain knobs
Chrome wheels and radial tires
No band on air tubes
Vacuum advance bulb on wrong corner
Too few hood buffers
Share tire cover wrong material and color
We can just name her Sybil in honor of her multiple personalities. 1500/1600? RHD/LHD?

R J Brown

According to DVLA (OK, I am a bit bored) it was registered in 1956 but 1600 engine was not fitted until about 1959
Graham V

hi they told me it was a 1500 rebored to 1600 during rebuild

At the recent Barett-Jackson auction in Scotsdale AZ. USA. There were two MGAs sold.
MGA #1 was a '56 1500 that was in old english white. The color looked off and the dash board was done in black. Otherwise the car looked OK. The selling price was $19,000 US. The second car was '60 1600 that had been resto-moded. The wheels were chrome wires, the radio was a sirus satalite unit with big door speakers in the door panels. The gear shift knob was wood, and the air cleaners were chrome. The car was black with red interior and sold for $31,000. Big money for a non concourse car.

Glad that you are looking for another one! Still can't put the wide screen in the back seat, but could be more fun! Does it need a tool kit?

Russ

Hi I would rather have this one for a lot less money

http://www.modernmotoring.com/ then go onto showroom and look for red MGA

Gordon

or a twin cam for under £20K

gordon
g c pugh

Regarding the master cylinder, the engine bay pictures are from when the car was LHD. This will now have been moved to the other side together with the steering column! Odd that they didn't bother to take another picture though.
Neil McGurk

Gordon,

With the Twin Cam it is strange that people do not spend a couple of dollars on some small items to make it look right.
Fit a proper grille not a MK11, clips for the ignition cables, the remote radiator side header tank overflow, the seal across the top of the radiator, and the proper fuel filler cap.

Hi
I am thinking about seling my twinky. But where to hide from the likes of you? You see I am a sinner and did not go by Clausager bible. My sins are numerous and glaring. The colour is mahagony, very nice, black piping, The gray original just looks like .... I have 10 (ten) fuses and 6 (six) relays, the el system is nowhere neer the original Lucas 50 years out of date design. And that is only the start.
Why to hide? The way you rip the fellow car above,
I have piece of junk not worth a dime. I will have to make offer to somebody to take it of my hands.
Martin

P.S. Will not sell and do not have spare parts
m zazvorka

Martin,

The issue in this thread is that the seller advertise the car as: "restoration to concourse standard", but seems to be that the price and the standards are not meet ed, according with the opinions above!
R Garcia

Hi, I think the point I was trying to make is that the car, whilst looking lovely, seems vastly overpriced and it would be a shame if someone who didn't know the MGA well paid that much for the car believing it to be 100% correct and was later very disappointed with it, they are asking very good twin cam prices. Just trying to protect the unwary, perhaps the garage paid a lot for it themselves.

gordon
g c pugh

You are right Gordon - very overpriced . I think the mistake the sellers always seem to make is calling them "concours" restorations - when they should just say "to show standard".
I know what Martin means when MGA owners rip a car they are looking at. When I have mine at a show you can always tell when a fellow A owner is looking - they pick up on all the faults.
Cam Cunningham

Hi , at last a nice car still a bit pricing

gordon
g c pugh

Gordon
Am I out of touch but isn't it well overpriced at £23k?
Graham M V

Hi Graham I meant to say a bit pricey

Gordon

Gordon

Am I reading this right and you are in the market for an MGA again?

Your insurance policy on the Mother-in-Law must have paid out!
