MG MGA - Jacking the rear end!
I am going to overhaul the diff on my car in the next couple of weeks (install new sun and planetary gear trust washers to take some of the slack out and eliminate the clunk with 1st and 2nd gear changes) - that brings me to my query - where is the best place to jack the car and install axle stands for this task? I have a trolley jack and axle stands (2000 kgs - plus a hydraulic and a scissor jack - not lucky enough to have a 2 post hoist or a pit). I normally use the trolley jack under the U bolt plate and then put an axle stand under the forward or rear section of the spring as a safety back up - this works fine when working on the brakes, prop shaft, etc but would prefer the axle stands to be under the axle housing when removing the diff and axles. If you use this jacking point, it is impossible to get the axle stands under the axle housing near the spring/U bolts - also the hand brake cable gets in the way on one side. Can you jack on the chassis frame just forward of the spring front fixing bracket using a wooden block on the trolley jack with a groove down the centre to clear the weld ridge on the chassis? This would give plenty of clearance to get the axle stands under the axle housing. How do you guys jack and suspend your car for a diff removal? Mike |

Just use your trolly jack and place it in the center of the diff. Thn use your jack stands on the frame just in front of the spring shackles. this will allow your differential to hang down on the straps. Drop ypur drive shaft and pull both axles out. Then you can remove the bolts and pull the pumkin to work it on that bench, Use a new gasket and front seal. you do not need to remove the pinion gear. Just the flange to change the seal. Sandy |
