MG MGA - Joining the supercharged club
After thinking about it and searching for a very long time, I've finally found a judson kit for what I consider to be a very decent price. It's very dirty but all of the bits appear to be present, with the exception of the crank pulley. That's not a big deal since a custom pulley will be required anyway to use it on my 5 bearing 18GB engine / harmonic balancer. The kit is now with judson guru George Folchi awaiting rebuild. I should have it back from George in time to install for the start of driving season next spring. I can hardly wait! |

Dirty, but complete. Looks good. Congratulations. |

Well done. If you have a look at the five speed gear knob thread you can see some pics of my new engine all assembled with the Judson |

Your new engine looks great Dominic. |

If you can get George to send the carb elsewhere, I'd recommend ihonlynorth, com. They seem to be the only ones who really know these carbs. |

Does George not do a good job of rebuilding the carb for these kits? |

As far as I can tell (and I've done a fair bit of research on this) IHOnly North is the only place than can recon the major fail point of these carbs. The carbs I got from George both suffered from the fault which causes flooding and uncontrollable mixture. The carb guy at IHOnly has received his Judson baptism from me, so I don't think George is sending his carbs there. See this thread here for details http://www.ihonlynorth.com/forums/carb-tech/510-holley-19xx-series-carb-stuff.html |

Here are pictures of my carb dismantled while being redone. It appears to have had the wrong jet in it, so I'm looking forward to even better performance when it comes back. |

And here complete and all the little problems fixed. Whatever you do don't break the plastic accelerator pump cam. They are made of unobtanium. |

Looks good Dominic. Can you give more info about "the major fail point of these carbs"? How much did it cost to have the carb rebuilt by IHOnly North? |

When I had to send my Supercharger to George, I posted all through the postal service priority, taking care to ensure my package. When the package arrived at its destination, the carburetor were totally destroyed and in pieces. I then found and buy a good carburetor on the net in Louisiana USA. Finally after doing other more research, I finally got hold of a carburetor new in its original packaging (a Holley 1904 with Visi-Flow glass bowl) just a few miles from my home. The guy had yet another new in the box, if anyone cares, I can check if he still have it . I finally installed the new carburetor in my Judson and everything works fine. Jules. jdesb@videotron.ca |

Jules, I'd definitely be interested to know if that carb is still available and the cost. |

Majjor fail point is the economiser valve, which is cheaply made and eventuallzbreaks - see the IHonly thread. The refurb including shipping and a range of jets to try out cost 201 USD including shipping back to Switzerland. Jules - can you let me know what Jet you have in your carb? The car is back apart! I tried to set the valves last night and found that the engine was locked solid. When I released it from the gearbox, it turns freely, as does the gearbox, so I have to look around the clutch.... Ho Hum. |
