MG MGA - Judson goes on at last
After 3 years of looking at my beautifully shiny Judson in the cupboard, I have fitted it to the original 1600 motor of RIP. Shock/horror, it started first time, but Dominic has advised to use copious amounts of 10W oil in the Oiler. Where does one get it from? The internet tells me it is only availible as fork oil in motor cycle shops at $20 to $30 per litre! Maybe I can't afford to run the beauty! Is there a more reasonably priced alternative product availible? Dave |

Maybe you should buy a service station! |

I use a light oil for my Myford lathe, called NUTO H32. I have often wondered about using it in the SU dashpot. I have just looked it up on the internet and it reads quite well, including being a lubricant for vanes etc. I would be interested to hear what others say about it and whether it would suit your Judson. http://www.imperialoil.ca/Canada-English/Files/Products_Lubes/IOCAENINDESNuto_H.pdf Steve |

I have not ever had a Judson myself, but a friend in the MGA club ran his using Marvel Mystery Oil. Which has been around for a long time and still on the shelf in most auto supply stores. Anyone else used this in a Judson? |

MMO is not available outside the USA. I buy 10W monograde oil in 20 litre containers for less than $100 US, so it must be cheaper in Oz. It's used in machine shops a lot, so that may be a hint on where to look. I found it here with a google search in Australia: http://www.atlanticoil.com/oil/diesel-oil-supermax-monograde.aspx Contact form is here http://www.atlanticoil.com/contact-us.aspx Also available here in QLD http://www.prolube.com.au/transtec_10w.shtml You don't need gallons of the stuff, 1 litre should last for two tanks of fuel, although I op up routinely at every fuel stop. For the instructions for the oiler, you need to consult the instructions on my site (where else for a Judson MGA?) and adjust to a drop in the sight glass every five seconds or so. I have often wondered if 10W hydraulic fluid is the same thing as 10W oil? Does it have the same lubricating properties? Maybe it has the same viscosity but different lubricating preperties? Or is that the same thing? Why is life so difficult? Dave PS Have not progressed with the Judson as I have been busy inserting a MGB Mk1 O/D gearbox into RIP. Boy, who said it was easy!!! |
