MG MGA - Judson Spercharger lubricator..no oil drips
I fitted this unit many moons ago and it has worked without and real problems since ...greatly improves the car performanace
But .......I have had my car garaged for a year whilst my mind etc was consumed on other tasks ( incl..a divorce!!.) and went back a few days ago to give it a full check , oil , grease etc and get it back on the road . After all that It started first time so pleased but then I started some adjustments and noted that the judson lubricator ( built into the end of the rocker cover ..see pic) was not feeding its oil drips . No amount of adjustment would induce oil to flow/Drip. I disconnected the vac hose at the lubricator and there was a good vacuum...so next step looks like pulling the lubricator assembley apart and checked blockage etc... Any experience/ advice very welcome !! |

Hi Neil
Before you pull the oiler itself apart, just remove the bolt in the filler trough and lift the whole assembly out. Typically there is a sludgy blockage in the bottom of the pickup tube which can be cleaned out and checked again without servicing the oiler. I'll dig out my oiler servicing instructions and mail them to you directly I am about to fit mine to a 1950 engine with a PB SC head, and all the rest done by Chris Betson! Everything is ready to do, I just have to get the current project finished (gearbox rebuild and engine gaskets changed) on a friend's car, should be done with that this week....... Dominic |

Are you installing a standard Judson blower on your 1950cc motor Dominic or is it a modified one to give more boost? Cheers Colyn |

It is standard-ish
It has a different set of pulley to go with the damper pulley of the MGB engine, so the ratio has changed to give a tad more boost. But the big change is the same as Neil's, the junking of the standard Holley carb and the use of my custom manifold and a HIF44 carb as used on the Moss unit. Result is only 4-5 lbs of boost, but a big increase in power is expected even with this limited boost pressure because of the much improved fuel delivery. I don't want to go crazy, the idea is to get more torque, not do burnouts. I'd also like to not be constantly breaking things. The ignition is to be controlled by a CB Performance Black Box, which allows custom ignition timing using almost any electronic points system, and a reduction of advance when under boost so that the risk of pre-detonation (pinking) is removed So honestly speaking, not standard at all ! But anyone using a standard Judson setup is really asking for trouble because the Holley carb is probably the worst choice available for the application. The gearbox/engine refresh project is finished and will be collected in the next half hour or so. I got attacked by a swarm of mosquitos as I was washing it in the dark under the security light at 7pm, which is *ing ridiculous in the middle of October. So much for "climate change is a conspiracy"! As a further aside, my Apple autocorrect seems to have latent Calvinistic tendencies as it always changes pre-detonation to predestination :) |

Dominic..your advice and document solved the issue. I did remove the reservoir/filler bolt and pulloff the whole assembly. There was no blockage at bottom of lift tube ....whole reservoir clean.
However I then removed the top adjuster /needle assembly and the bottom lift tube off the body of the oiler and following advice in the doc. used wd40 to clean.... blew it through every orifice and soaked it , left it for an hour and then checked whether vacuum was coming through the tube ..success ! Assembled and set the drip rate ..so a happy wee bunny! Interesting that there was no seal between valve cover and the oiler ..explains why i overflowed once . Need to keep the l;evel in view on the sight glass. Back on the road tomorrow.. Good luck w yr projects .. |
