MG MGA - Jumping out of 4th gear in an MGA

I have an MGA that has been off the road for many years. The engine has been out and since being back in and now back on the road, I am experiencing it jumping out of top gear under acceleration. I feel that the gear stick is hitting the tunnel and forcing it out or not allowing it to go all the way in. I noticed in the archives of 1998 that other people had a similar problem and wonder if there is a quick fix or if I need to take out the gearbox and rebuild it. I must admit, I haven't tried to release the carpet around the gearstick but it does feel tight there.

Garry,

My MGA did the same thing ( only in 3rd gear, which i understand is more common ) I had just put a new boot on the shifter, and found that the rubber was so hard it was pre-loading the shifter and making it pop out of gear. Put the old soft boot back on, and problem solved................

good luck,

Gary, pull the shift boot and check it out. 4th gear is he least likely to jump out of gear as there are no forces in the trans to put pressure on it. Fourth gear amounts to not much more than a coupling between the input and output shafts.

Mine started to do this, replacing the gearbox bearings stopped it.

Gary ,I have recently striped my gearbox to fix the 2nd gear syncro and would not wish the job on anyone ! Maybe the following might help/ I had a very stiff shifting problem when finished and found that the shift mechanism was out of line, that is the cover on it is not doweled and I had it bolted down out of alaignment. Loosing the bolts and wriggling the lever around sorted the problem. Mybe 4th is not going in properly. P.S. If you had bearing wear causing the problem I think you would hear all about it Sean
