MG MGA - Just one very black plug
Anyboby got any idea what could cause just one plug to be very black when all the other 3 are a nice brown colour? I don't suppose it's relevant but this is on a twin cam MGA. Cheers Phil Parmenter |

Oil in the combustin chamber, possible worn valve guide or broken piston ring. Start with a compression check. If not all even, then follow with a blow down test to see where it's leaking. Odds are more likely bad rings in one cylinder. |

Thanks Barney, will check that out Phil |

Check the simple things first. A faulty spark plug wire. |

Phil, Will you be at silverstone next weekend? If so, us Twin Cam guys are meeting up at 1pm on saturday & Sunday I think. Let us know if your keen for a beer. Cheers <MARK> 801 |

Hi Phil. Could be a bad spark plug, bad high tension lead, bad connector at the plug, or the other nastier stuff Barney and others mentioned. Good Luck, Glenn |

Don't rule out carbon tracking in the distributor cap either! |

How well does the car run? |

Tom, This is my brother's car and has been running quite well. That is until he took it to be tuned on a rolling road - it now has a bad case of running on. The one black plug was there before the tuning was done though. Think what we'll do is change the plugs and leads to start with and check the timing. Cheers, Phil |

Come back with the culprit when you find it, Phil. Do one thing at a time, if you can, so you know which action fixed it. |
