MG MGA - K&N E-3212 filters - Moss PN 222-928

I have just completed replacing the original oiled felt air filters with K&N E-3212 elements using the original Vokes cans (with guidance from Barney's site http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/carbs/cb201.htm ).
These are the latter type referred to on the last page of Barney's instructions - the ones with the slightly smaller I.D.

While I purchased the Moss kit 222-928 I also elected not to use the felt pads that come with the kit but cut down the expanded mesh screens and standoff posts. This was a simple exercise using a bench grinder - only one mesh aperture around the screen needs to be removed to get the correct height.
Fitting them into the screen appears impossible at first (filter is a bigger diameter than the screen) but I just folded them in half and then when inside the screen, popped them open again - voila!
With this model filter it was easy to modify around the vent tube - 3 vee cuts on the inside with an Olfa knife following the pleats and then spread the area open with your fingers.
You need to take the cans off the carbies completely so you can grind down the standoff posts so they are slightly less than the element height - having them on the bench makes fitting the filter around the vent pipe easy.

Has anyone ever tried to clean the oil off the inside of a K&N filter (that will surely come with extended use) when servicing? What do you use as K&N recommend washing these filters out with their detergent and water?
