MG MGA - Knock sensor

Starting a new thread in response to requests from Larry and Steve

The knock sensor I have is for the J&S Safeguard. It did work, but having done some work on that side of the engine bay I have lost the bit of paper with the hookup details, and haven't got round to hooking it up again. I do have a very very quiet engine (mechanically at least !!) - it may not work with one that rattles. The guy at J&S is a really nice guy (seems to spend a fair bit of time playing Pool...) so I just need to call him and get a new set off his website. Cool bit of kit - it monitors and ajusts timing in real time per cylinder.

The J&S details are here

http://www.jandssafeguard.com/ look at tech for more information.

I now have to build the gauge (I have the diagram for this from TI for the A/F side and from J&S for the knock side (both very very similar)). I am building this because I don't want yet anither hole in my dash (and there's no space for another gauge either with the addition of the Judson boost gauge).

I have no idea which knock sensor was provided - I bought the kit used from another member on the BBS.

Hi Dominic

I gather you have mapped ignition, whose system is it?

No Terry, I just use a D25 distributor reconditioned by Aldon, recurved by them to suit a SC, and fitted with an Ignitor electronic ignition. The J&S sits between the ignitor and the coil, and the signal from the knock sensor sends detonation information to the J&S, which advances and retards the ignition in real time according to the noses the engine makes. That's it.

It's a better solution than mapping, because it's real time and does continuous adjustments to the timing automatically - which means I can advance the timing to get max power and let the computer do the retarding necessary to the minimum required to remove detonation when it occurs, and it does it so fast that there is no more than a single (minor) knock before the electronics have weeded it out.

I recommended this solution to a garage here that was having terrible problems with a very highly tuned E Type on which they had spent thousands trying to to sove preignition problems - and it was solved in 60 minutes work by fitting this system. Apparently the race guys in the US wear by them, just no-one sells them in Europe.

Thanks for the response Dominic. This weekend I went over the BIG hill to the Buttonwillow Moss British Extravaganza, wish you all could have been there. It appears I finally have had some sucess with my pre-ignition problem by revisiting timing, again, and with a little help form Lucas {of all companies!} octaine-booster.
I have also contacted J&S which is just up-the-road from here. Thats next if nessesary.
