MG MGA - Labor Day All British Fun Run - Malibu, CA
This Monday is the Labor Day run starting in Malibu, CA. The route follows some really twisty and fun canyon roads through the Santa Monica Mountains. Labor is the word of the day because your arms will be tired by the time we are finished with this one! The route sheet and general information can be found here: http://www.s93550087.onlinehome.us/2006_labor_day_run.pdf See you there! |

Steve, I will do a mini pre-run for you to make sure everything is OK. I will be in Malibu for a dinner on Sat. afternoon. I hope my eyes can survive.!!! Jeff |

I was thinking of a run on Friday or Saturday to check the smaller roads. Let me know if you find any problems! |

I wish I could make it on Monday, sheesh this is the second or third run I have missed. For those not in southern California, the route that Steve has chosen is one of the most spectacular scenic backroads in the US, and the weather is almost always perfect, since it hugs the Pacific coast but is high up in the mountains with warm (often hot) breezes. Usually in the morning you are literally driving through low, mountaintop-hugging clouds then you emerge into blazing sunshine and craggy rock formations. The last run I attended had quite a few little british cars end-to-end, navigating up the steep switchbacks, it was a cool thing to see. I took this little video at sunrise of the shadow of my MGA on Mulholland Highway, it is part of Steve's route. Gotta love that inverted-bathtub profile. <http://www.jimpaul.tv/mov/mulholland7AM.mov> |

Steve, I pre ran the course yesterday and it was great weather and lot of cops. Our trip up to Malibu was a nice run and had a great time at our friends house and met Pam Anderson and Kid Rock at their house. On the way home in the evening we broke down just north of Malibu Colony. We had gas spraying on the hot manifold. Got lucky that the engine flooded out and we did not catch fire. I do carry a fire extinguisher. I took the carb off the Judson Supercharger and found that the inlet fuel valve unit was completly unscrewed from the carbs main body which allowed all the gas that the fuel pump could push foward to go all over the engine and manifold because it now bypassed the needle and seat. It cost a lousy $2.00 to fix the problem. The worst part was waiting for AAA to tow us home on a flatbed. We had to wait for over 2 1/2 hours for them to get to us and tow us home. We arrived at 3 am. Thank goodness that I have AAA plus which gives me a 100 mile free tow. Normally it is only 7 miles and you pay an arm and a leg for the rest of the tow. Hope to see you there tommorow. I now have to do my dance to the Gods of Lucas to keep that evil sucker away. If I can get the dance right, I will see you there tommorow. P.S I plan on having a great time, and Steve bring your camera to take pictures as I made sure my luggage rack is on correct and I would not like to upset those who are sticklers on every small detail. |

Jeff: Pam Anderson and Kid Rock - are you joking or would you care to elaborate? Regards, M.D. '57 Coupe |

Sorry to hear about that Jeff. At least you made the run! But now I really know why you almost missed it... lack of sleep! ;) My GT started spewing fuel the other day also. THe o-ring at the adjuster onder the float bowl has dissentigrated from that damn ethynol fuel. Looks like I'll have to replace all the rubber. Thankfully I've already replaced the fuel hoses with modern materials so they won't be affected. |

When we went to our friends house on the beach, the cove has about 20 homes on it. Pam was renting one of the homes with Kid Rock. She was just out enjoying her day on the beach in her biniki. Looks just as good in real life as on tv. She was very friendly and said hello. Talked for a minute and we went on our way. I alos found out Dick Clark lives there too, but not as active these days. Most of the stars are just like us too but their job is acting. (I wish I made their money.) On the run on Sunday, it was a nice one. I especially like Tuna Rd which is an one way from the top of the mountain down to the ocean. Steve, I had another problem on the run. When we stopped, my car would not start with the starter. The first stop I had to put the car in reverse and roll down the hill and pop the clutch. The second time, I took out my starter handle which I have not done in over 30 years. I am now glad I had the dog ear nut on the crank modified at the machine shop to work with the Judson Supercharger. I had to figure out what my problem was to get it fixed. I will post a quiz as to what the problem is and what the fix is. When is the next run?. I know, we should do a New Years day run in our cars with the tops down in about 75 degree temps. That should make everyone pissed off at us for having such a good time while they are in the frozen tundra!!!! |

Hey Steve and Jeff - we should set up the Malibu run as a regular thing, maybe on holidays? Open to all. Next target date Halloween? I agree we need a New Years day event as well. |

There are already three of them, all on holidays. Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. There is a rumor about a holiday light run in December. :) Jeff, you can start a supercharged 1800 with a crank handle? Wow! I figured that would be fairly difficult to turn. |
Steve Simmons |
The engine has to be set up as a low compression so it will turn over easy. The supercharger does not do much until under load. Thank goodness for the hand crank. |

I've been able to push start whenever necessary. It makes me glad to be into small, lightweight cars! |
