MG MGA - Later Production LJ225 Shelley Jack

A bit of Shelley Jack intelligence for Barney:

The Ebay seller of a late production LJ225 (with the reinforced yoke) reckons it was supplied from 1965. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130264773247&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:us

Barney does not suggest this version was supplied with the later 1600, just that the year of its introduction is not known. This information would appear to confirm that it was too late for the 1600, being supplied mainly for Healeys.

Bidding is at $261 (with handles) as I post.

Picture attached.

The jack went for $455 ($285 at 1.6 $/£)!! That's the second highest price I have seen paid for a jack. Only beaten by the Shelley A6 for the MG PA/PB at £293.

I know Dave Breneman has one. Gordon must have one. Others may want to sell at that sort of price.

HI Steve, don't have one of those lol

What a shame. It could have financed your respray. Pity you can't edit your own posts. I meant £285 in my post above, not $285. Mind you, the way the money markets are going the $ and the £ will soon be on parity!

I think I'll hold on to mine until the economy recovers. Maybe it will finance the mgc roadster I want to get. :-)
David Breneman

Not sure why I'm hanging on to mine really as it won't go under the MGA's front suspension or cross member when a front tyre is flat ! As a result I have aquired and now carry, a modern scissor jack which works, as I want to be able to change a wheel when I get that puncture out on the road.
Any offers?

Out of interest I just dug out my 'LJ225' jack which has the identical markings cast-in the base as described by Steve and in his pic above, but notice mine has a different top casting and both the inner and outer threads are approx 1-1/4in longer than the base's height. Any thoughts on the differences guys? Pic attached...

That is not an MGA Jack, nor a big Healey. I have yet to find out more.

My website page discusses all the LJ225 options: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/shelley_jacks.htm

Thanks for coming back on that. Looks like mine is similar to the LJ225 shown as the 17th jack on your listing. Your description fits it exactly. A cowboy sold this to me unseen as for a 1600 MkII... not.
Impressive site Steve.

Looking at "Barney's" jacks, I notice he lists my version and calls it the 'LJ225 59'. He also states, and I can confirm, the ratchet head is alloy. It's diecast with no lettering. The plot thickens...

Bet you enjoyed visiting Bob West's - must be like an Alladin's MGA cave.
As the recognised MGA jack expert... Any further thoughts on the "LJ225 59" version???

No real clue I am afraid. However, the slightly higher fully retracted height must mean that it was supplied with cars with bigger diameter wheel discs. Another (extended) version of the LJ225 was supplied with some E-Type Jaguars, so maybe the answer lies in that direction. Any E-Type owners out there to educate us?

Thanks for pointing me back to Barney's site. Some of his information would seem to confirm the jack I got yesterday is the correct LJ23 for the early 1500. I will post a photo on my other thread.

Looks like a bit of DIY casting on this LJ225: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHELLEY-LJ225-JACK-CIRCA-1959_W0QQitemZ190267675300QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item190267675300&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Goodness, someone with a history of buying vintage tools has put a bid in for the jack immediately above. I trust it is not you Gordon!!!!!

Hi Steve not guilty this time, jacks arn't my thing for some reason, they are all yours lol

Unbelievable. The LJ225 on Ebay in my link 3 posts above and attached here as an image just went for £41 ($60). Not bad for home-forged yoke and a jack variant that has no car type attached to it (as yet).

However, I recognised the buyer as a frequent seller of Shelley and other jacks. I assume he will break it down and convert it to the correct MGA/Healey/Jaguar variant. I will keep a look out in his future adverts.
