MG MGA - Laygear circlips
Does anyone have a trick, tool, or method for removing the circlips from the MGA gearbox laygear? I know the needle bearings must frequently be replaced but the factory installed the needle bearing circlips like they are never going to be removed. |

Yes. The only reason for removing the clips is to replace the bearings, so we presume the old bearings will not be re-used. Place a small punch against the clip half way around from the tips, and give it a whack with a hammer to break the clip. |

Thanks Barney. I had spent half-hour trying to pry the damn things out with no success. Three hammer blows by your method and they were out in 5 min. The needle bearings were falling out all over the gearbox as soon as the layshaft was pulled out. So, I assumed they needed replacing along with the layshaft. MERRY CHRISTMAS! |

I asked the same question, got the same answer, and used the same method....from Barney, of course! It only took one whack for me. |

Why should Barney offer three-fold more effective advice to Tom than to Henry? |

Maybe Tom has a bigger hammer. |

It's not the size but how you swing it. Or something like that..... |
