MG MGA - Laygear Prices
I have been keeping an eye out for a replacement laygear. I got a complete gearbox from Barney a few summers ago (thanks!!!) and used it (laygear) and the reverse gear in my gearbox as it was otherwise sound. I have been putting it off, but it's time to get that spare gearbox back together so I can have a spare ready to go. Maybe it's my imagination, but the prices seem kind of steep. What is a fair price for a loose one these days? |

I guess they have always been about $100 for the past several years. That's why cheap used gearboxes keep following me home. Need another one? I currently have two extra spare boxes with good gears. |

Barney, I shoulda asked you first! If you ever decide to crack one of those open for parts I could certainly use the laygear and reverse. Maybe even most of the other internal bits/nuts/bolts/clips as well for spares. I had such a time shipping that last gearbox here that I would never ask that of anyone! By the time the case was bubble wrapped and boxed it was right at the dimensional limit for an APO. I think we even had to 'adjust' the box to get there. Odd because I shipped full MGB floorpans just a couple of years back with no problems. Most of the bits minus the main shaft and tail housing fit into a couple of flat rate APO postal boxes and shipped for $14 each without any problems! Of course, this would drag you into breaking down a gearbox, boxing it all up and taking a trip to the Post office to mail everything not to mention you would have an empty case to deal with. If your'e up for it I am too, but I would never hold a grudge if you weren't! |
