MG MGA - Layshaft for a three main gearbox
I'm planning to replace the layshaft and rollers inside the gearbox. I have read so much about the poor quality of the metal being used these days in the production of these shafts. Can anyone fill me in as to where would be the best place to buy a good quality shaft, naturally, following Barney's advice, I want one hard enough that when scraped with a file no damage will result. I will also be replacing all the syncros which I hope will also be of the best quality. Will be grateful for any advice on these too. |

I got one from SF and tested the hardness. It came out to 65 Rockwell, which is OK, according to previous posts. Cheers, Mark |

if you can source the original 20-roller bearing sets, you should. The replacements are only I think 11 roller caged sets. Good luck in this! |

There were a number of kits around to change over to the 4 bearing laygear with the larger diameter shaft (requires reaming the holes in the case) as used on the 1967 MGB trans. Don't know if you can find any more of those. I always used to use the Datsun synchros in my boxes - seemed to stand up better. |
