MG MGA - Leaf Spring setup
Hi fellas, I've just installed the rear suspension back onto the frame and I have a couple questions. 1) Is there a specific torque for the bolts mounting the shocks? 2) How much do you compress the spring plates and the ubolts before considering them done? 3) How much slack should the rebound straps have? In my case I was thinkings about 25lbs torque for the shocks and other bolts, and my rebound straps were broken before so I don't have a point of reference for that. Right now the car is sitting on the rear wheels only with no weight on them and the rebound straps have a little slack, but very little. Also, I have left most of the suspension bits loose until I've put the car back under some weight. I assume this means normal weight? Body, engine, gas, etc...? So tightening the suspension is nearly the last thing to do? Thanks, Christopher |

I would tighten everything except maybe the rubber bushes at the front of the springs. |

Christopher, On the rebound straps: I fitted mine before the body, etc. was on and they were tight with no slack. With the body on the amount of slack will depend on the condition of the springs, etc. I currently have an estimated 2-3" slack. Definitely have the weight on the suspension before the final tightening. When I did a test drive of the chassis I put a ~250# weight on the rear of the frame. Jim |

Thanks Jim, that's about where I sit at the moment so I'm thinking I'm good with the rebound straps. Thanks for the tip about the weight. Regards, Christopher |
